In many cases, you will find that Low setting yields great results. You can use the Compare feature to try multiple modes and preview the results.
- Zoom on the Histogram. Clipping can still occur on tracks with a low amplitude, and it can be hard to set the threshold and visualize the clipping on the Histogram with these tracks. The small + and - buttons to the left of the Histogram are designed to help with this. Click on these to change the amplitude scale and set threshold values as low as -64.0 dB.

- IZotope RX's De-clip audio plug-in and module repairs digital and analog clipping artifacts. Audio clipping occurs when A/D converters are pushed too hard or magnetic tape is over-saturated. De-clip can be extremely useful for reducing distortion in recordings that were made in a single pass, such as live concerts, interviews, and any audio that cannot be re-recorded.
- Setting the gain too high on a preamp meant you were distorting on the way in, and there was really no way to fix that. The De-clip plug-in, available in both RX Plug-in Pack and RX Audio Editor, is designed to essentially redraw the waveform as it would have been before clipping occurred, which means that now those takes can be rescued.

Some editors provide plugins that can add some improvements, Izotope has developed a suite, intended for repairing audio : this include music restoration, “declipping”, noise removal etc. It’s a bit expensive but if you really need it, you have it all !

This free VST declipper can bring the oversqueezed samples to life, or smoothes a bad vocal recording. It was used on the clipped sample you can see on the first picture.
Don’t expect miracles, but don’t hesitate to test the three algo, to find which is working best for you.

This one is not intented for “declipping” but is a transient designer, and it can help to get a smoother sound. It’s subtle, and more important : it has a big knob !
Don’t expect wonders, once a signal is clipped / saturated / overclipped / distorded, you can’t go back to a clean signal.
